Orphic Hymn to Pluto Translation

To Pluto

Oh you who live in your temple under the ground,

mighty hearted,

in the deep-shadowed fields of Tartarus, deserted by light,

chthonic Zeus, sceptred,

these sacrifices willingly accept.

Pluto, you have the keys to the whole world,

wealth-giver to mortals through your annual fruit

for the third lot that fell for you was that of the earth, the queen of everything,

and you were given the kingdom of the underworld,

the seat of the immortals,

you hold up the world of the mortals

as you hold up your throne from a place of darkness

far-reaching in its vastness

untiring and abandoned by breath,

as undiscriminating Hades

in flowing black Acheron

holding the roots of the earth,

you reign over humans through death,

receiving many, containing much,

well-advised one

who once after you married the daughter of pure Demeter

and detained her in the fields

you kidnapped her by sea

on four horses

through Attica

leading her to a cave

in the land of Eleusis

where the gates to Hades stand,

it is only you who rewards the work of people

the visible and the invisible,

god of the within

powerful holder of the all,

sacred one,

splendid in your honour,

gladdened with your hallowed initiates

and the holy respects placed upon you

graciously invoked,

Come, be joyful with your devotees
